Disabling X Server to install Nvidia graphics drivers

I want to install new Nvidia drivers into Suse linux 9.0, but because an Xserver is running, it wont let me! can anyone help me around this problem. (I tried installing it in the failsafe mode but there were no kernel headers for it. though i dont know what that means).[/quote]

Logon to the console as root andf type 'init 3', then install and to get back to X type 'init 5'

Personally I don't see why you don't just use YOU to get the update, it's listed as an option when you update and it installs and configures the latest driver for you.

For kernel headers you need to install the kernel source!

SuSE has its own nvidia RPM, which won't need any kernel headers. Correct me if I'm wrong.
