3x3 Desktops

Dear KDE-Community,

I know that this must sound stupid to many users but be it as it may it is important to me. I am a 9 year un*x user who started with fvwm1 back then and that had 3x3 viewports on one desktop preconfigured for me.

I /could/ switch from viewports to desktops (although I don't like it very much) but I will *not* abandon the 3x3 layout. And I can't find any way to achieve this in KDE. Actually this is one of the main reasons that prevent me switching from plain sawfish with nothing else to KDE. Of course I want it with an old style pager :-)

Is it possible to get a 3x3 layout of desktops (or even better viewports) with KDE and if so: how?

Kind Regards
Stefan Kamphausen

RE: 3x3 Desktops

you are not alone in this! I've just come over from being used to doing things the gnome way.. and the 3x3 desktop switcher was a crucial part of my experience. Having 5x2 just doesn't seem right :/

Anyone able to offer a solution?

well, after some more playing around, it looks like I've found a solution :) Right click on one of the desktops, and go to show -> rows -> 3! It looks like Automatic is the default, and automatically chooses 2.. I've done this and it's nice to have a 3x3 layout again! The only thing I miss is being able to drag windows from one desktop to another using the tray applet, like I could in Gnome.. but ah well.. Guess this will have to do! (I realize this can be done if I launch the 'pager', but I don't want to have to do that just to move a window.. it's easier to right click the window in the taskbar)

Hi surreal,

thanks for the hint. I am currently giving KDE another try (after spending the better of a day configuring the rest ;-).

have you seen this?

I'm not sure if this will help, but it looks like you can drag windows from one desktop to another from the pager. At least that's what I understand from the change log. Have fun.
