No more kickers/panels, need help!

Besides the main panel, I have a child panel that I hide automatically at the top, which has the taskbar, Kcharacterselect, etc. Yesterday, I was trying to add more items to it when there was a KDE panel crash. Now when I reboot into Libranet2.8.1 and KDE3.1.3, I have no main panel, nor do I have the child panel, i.e. no panels at all.

Here is the crash message:

SHORT DESCRIPTION

The application KDE panel (kicker) crashed and caused the signal 8 (SIGFPE).

WHAT IS THIS?

Well, I just lost the window with the message, but to paraphrase it says something about SIGFPE concerns bugs....

All I want is to get both panels back. Right now I can minimize windows, but then I have to do ALT + TAB to get them back, or to switch from one window or another. I also have no way to open up the KDE launch menu and go to any applications. It's a nuisance.

All help is greatly appreciated. Please note that I am a very non-techie kind of person, so please give simple, complete, step-by-step instructions for a solution

IN ADVANCE, THANKS!

Richard L.

I guess the problem is with the config file of kicker (kde panel). You can try the following:

1) goto the directory: ~/.kde/share/config/
rename the file "kickerrc" to something else.

Note: All your user configurations for your kde desktop is found in that directory. Good place to check things if you face more situations like this. However, if you play with those files, your personal preferences can be lost. In your case, for the kicker - child panel, applications, actions etc. on your panel - will be reset to default values.

2) goto the directory: ~/.kde/share/apps/
move the directory "kicker" to something else (this maynot be needed... ).

3) Restart kicker (type "kicker" from a terminal, or from the KDE-run-command utility)

Hope that helped :)

Thanks, reks....

Unfortunately, several other things went wrong with KDE in Libranet2.8.1 when I updated it making KDE very unstable (for example, when I started to click anything on the desktop, the KDE desktop would instantly disapper and the Gnome desktop and Nautilus would replace it, but with the KDE panel still there instead of the Gnome panel).

So I re-installed Libranet.

I am so glad you gave me the information, as I'm sure it will be helpful in the future. I have printed it and am keeping it in my Linux file.

Cheers
