Keyboard settings doesn't stick

I have just installed KDE 3.2. It is mostly working, but the keyboard setting keeps changing. When I go into Control Center | Regional & Accessibility | Keyboard Layout and remove the x on Enable keyboard layout, then apply it agin and finally press Apply I get the right keyboard back. But after a while it will change again, so that everything I type is /&"&&H. It happend twice while I typed this.

I would seem that the settings cannot be stored, so my first guess was that I didn't have the proper access right. However, /tmp/kde-me seems fine and is beeing updated. Or perhaps it is something resetting the keyboard? Any ideas?
