KDM vs. no display manager- settings lost?

I've encountered a very odd problem. I'm running Debian unstable, with KDE 3.1.5; everything's running great so far...

I just installed kdm (I haven't used a display manager in ages), though, and when I log in from kdm, it seems I have none of my normal desktop settings- everything's back to default. Even KMail asks me to setup an account for receiving mail.

If I return to the console and startx manually, all of my desktop settings are returned, the color schemes, background, etc. are all back to normal. And, KMail has my network account settings again.

What exactly is going on here, and how can I fix it? Or is it even worth the trouble?

Thanks-
Mike
