Can't open applications as su with Debian sarge

I just installed Debian 3.x (sarge). After I sign in as a user I can run apps just fine, but if I open a console and switch to super user (with su), I can't run any gui apps. This might be a permissions problem. I'm not sure. Here is the error message:

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0

Thank you for your help!

It's safer to do it with your hostname on the end eg. hostname enceladus :

xhost +enceladus

That way, only connections from enceladus would be accepted (I think that's how it works ^_^)
