KDE will not load in Mandrake 9.1

Hi: I have Mandrake Linux 9.1 and have successfully installed it on a different machine from this one and KDE seemed to work OK.
However, this machine doesn't seem to have everything working properly and KDE refuses to load. However, Gnome and ICE do work! If I select KDE as the desktop, I get a few bars of music and the beginning of the KDE task bar at the bottom of the screen and then the "Busy" mouse icon and the machine is locked up.

This computer is using a DSL connection, which works fine in Gnome. Konqueror does not. I am experienced in M$ products but am new to Linux. Any ideas what to do please?

(PS: I have thought of 9.2, but am still waiting for the free ISO's to try it).

PS: You may reach me at swameejeeXX@XXnetzero.net. Please remove the capital X's from the address.

Just an addendum to my first post:
I tried the suggestion given in a previous post, namely to remove the
"Superuser" from mounting the floppy and CD-ROM drives, replacing it
with "user".

Nothing changed. I still can't get into KDE! I did notice that when attempting to load any GUI, several empty windows flashed on the screen for about one quarter of a second. mandrake 7.0 (which I used to have) never did that!
