KDE not initializing on FreeBSD

I have installed FreeBSD 4.8 (Stable) on my machine. It boots in Command Line mode with no issues. I downloaded, unzipped, untarred, compiled, and installed the necessary driver file for my nVidia video card chipset. When I enter the command "startx", I get the NVIDIA splash screen, then there is an error message stating "kdeinit failure. Please check your installation." And then I completely lose control of the machine. I have to reboot via Reset switch. I admit to being a Linux novice and a Total Newbie on FreeBSD. I would appreciate any suggestions. Please forgive my ignorance in advance.
