Power Control Problem: Must Refresh Desktop

I'm running Slackware 9.1, KDE 3.1.4, and a Samsung SyncMaster 955DF monitor. Display power control is on and the monitor does turn off and back on as expected; however, most -- not all -- of the time when the monitor comes back on, the display looks like somebody painted it with yellow and brown paint with a very wide brush. I have to right click the mouse and search around for "refresh desktop" to get the display back to a usable state.

Any advice about what to do to correct this condition would be deeply appreciated.
