Sound performance

I have been playing around with getting sound to run smoothly on my system (a mandrake 9.1 vanilla install running kernel 2.4.21 and KDE 3.1.0). It's an old Althlon 500 with 256MB ram and a PowerVR Kyro II graphics card. SB Awe32 ISA PnP soundcard.

So far, the only combination of apps/modules I have found is running xmms, the arts output plugin, artsd (realtime priority and a fairly big buffer) and ALSA.

However, I would love to be able to run noatun due to the fact that it's better integrated into the desktop. This leads me to my question:

Is there anyone here who have a link to a page with information on how to get the most out of noatun sound performance and/or have any ideas on how to improve noatun performance?

Oh, and this is mostly for playing mp3s.
