Please read the documentation of your distro to figure out if and how acpi works on your laptop.

What distro are you using?
ACPI on HP laptops is a bit of a problem, but it seems to be somewhat useable in the newest kernels (2.4.20...)

im using 2.4.20-ck6 sources on gentoo and it runs quite well on my hp ze1115. the only problem that i have is with the time left monitor popping up when starting kde saying 0 time left. anyone know a good fix for this?
