K3b slow burn

I can burn CDs using K3b, but it does so slowly.
e.g. the first cd i burned had average overall speed of 138 kb/s (0.93x)
The burner, hp cd-writer 9100, is capable of more than that
How can I speed it up?

in the K3b setup, it shows that the burner is capable of 8x max write speed

I believe that on k3b setting you can also specify what drivers to use for your cd burner, so I think that the recommend drivers for your one will be generic-mmc but I am not sure. Have you tried using other software to see what the speed it? It may be worth having a look at the following site.
Some CD Burning Tools are to be found in:

http://sites.inka.de/~W1752/cdrecord/frontend.en.html

Try it out and maybe you will find that it is not the software but the hardware.

When I burnt a CD, there was a small drop down box available that allowed me to select the speed. I managed to burn at 4X for a CDRW.

Choose the "Write ISO Image" option from the Tools menu. There will be a large drop down box that shows you the CD drive chosen to be the writer. To the right of that (on mine at least) there should be another smaller drop down box that lets you specify the speed.

d'oh! I didn't even look. I just assumed it would default to the highest speed. I selectec 8x and it did it.
Thanks.

Hi,
have you run k3b setup successfully? I red that if you run k3b as a normal user, then cdrcord must use a slow buffer (somethinge like that)
Have you tried to run k3b as root (just for testing it)

CD writing speed

K3B thinks that the max speed for my CD burner is 4x, when it is really a 52x24x52x. How can I change that?

Try to to run setup by executing the following command:

kdesu k3bsetup

Good luck! :D

I've already run the setup - that's the problem. It detects my CD Burner as a 4x.

very easy, go to settings, option devices, click on the max write speed and put your top write speed... voila.. then just change the speed when in the box when you are ready to burn the cd...

best regards..

Sometimes the most obvious suggestions are the best one and all, anyway if you like to make it permanent, you can make the settings in the following file:

/opt/kde3.1.1/share/apps/k3b/k3bsetup

At least that is the path of my one, and all default setting is in there.
