Sound is not available immediately after startup

I'm running MDK9.0 with KDE 3.0.3 on asystem wih the ECS K7S5A motherboard with intergrated SiS 7012 sonud chipset. My problem is really weird. If i run some games, emus, or players (Tux Racer, Frozen Bubble, Chromium, ZSNES, Xine) immediately after starting kde, no sound comes out, unlike XMMS, which can play sounds immediately. But after waiting fot 10-15 minutes, sound becomes enabled. Is there any way to make these programs enable sound immediately?

I tried switching between ALSA and OSS drivers in Xine and XMMS, but it had no effect.

Your help would be much appreciated.

Sometimes, I get sound in Quake 3 and sometimes I don't. And sound works perfectly fine for other programs. I'm as clueless as you are. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I'm a newb myself, but I have had that prob. do you run zsnes with the artsdsp?
i assume that xmms may already be using it if it has no problems.
if you havent already, you could try running zsnes by doing

user@localhost: $ artsdsp zsnes
That works for me. If sound lags, you could try lowering the buffer size in Control Center. Hope that helps.
