Sound fades away

Under Mandrake 9.1 I am having problems with sound in KDE (I don't use any other wm, so I don't know if it is a global problem). When I first installed the volume level of system sounds was high, but gradually it has faded away. I tried various settings on kmix and aumix, without any success, and yesterday to uninstalled aumix, in case that was causing some sort of conflict. It's no better.

Every hour or so I get to the point where I have to re-set all the mixer settings. Even then, I can't get them very loud. I suspect that it is an hourly house-keeping job that's doing this, and so should be configurable, but I can't find it.

Can anyone tell me what causes this problem, and what I can do about it? I should also say that it is just system sounds that are a problem - xmms maintains high volume.
