Mouse select and drag periodically goes away

I am having a problem under Redhat 7.3 (2.1.18-3) with KDE 3 on a Dell Inspiron 4150 laptop - the select and drag capability periodically goes away! This is very annoying, especially when I'm attempting to copy large blocks of text between konsole windows. I've tried changing the mouse driver in my XF86Config file (section copied below), but still run into the problem. gpm has been disabled at boot also. Anyone have any suggestions?
