Taskbar Look

Whenever I apply an image to my taskbar it always ends up with a white border around it. It takes away the look of any gradients etc I've applied.

Likewise, is there anyway of skinning the taskbar buttons i.e. open programs.

I'm so used to skins in Windows where almost everything gets its own look and feel but in KDE it gets a short shift on some items.
