desktop icon not showing

I run Linux 8.2. I have installed the 0.9.23 version of xine. This comes without a good desktop icon so I have taken an incon file (xine_48x48.png) from 0.9.19 and placed it in my home desktop folder. This appears on my screen only as a generic png image rather than the icon image. What am I doing wrong?

First of all, if you intend to use it as an app icon, you need to creat a 'Link to Application' on the desktop, and in its properties, you can select the icon from there. Images just don't preview on the desktop. By the way, Linux iso nly up to 2.6 rightn ow, so you're really using some disto, most likely SUSE 8.2 since that the only distro I can think of that was recently 8.2.

Many thanks Kenneth. All I needed to do was put the new icon in the KDE icons file and then do as you suggested.

It was indeed SuSE 8.2. A nice distro I'm very happy with.

By the way, icons can be any where on your sytem. You can click the 'Other icons:' option in the icon selection window, and then the 'Browse' button.
