preview on icons

I'm using SuSE 8.2 - as the mouse ponter goes over icons for files/documents on the desktop, a panel pops up with a preview image. I don't want his - sometimes it obscures what I'm heading for, sometimes it's off screen so it's not so useful even if I did want it. I've gone to Configure Desktop>behaviour and all the 'show preview' buttons are unchecked.

Is there anywhere else I can disable this, or is there a config file I can edit?

Thanks,

Steve

In the control center:
KDE components -> file manager
-> Tab "behaviour" -> Box "Miscellaneous"
-> Checkbox "display file info"

(names translated from German,
so they may be slightly different on your system)

Thanks for the pointer. I went there, turned off the 'show file tips' function and all the 'allow preview' options under the preview tab. Now, when I first start up KDE, I don't get the previews but after I go to any other programme (such as Konq, Kmail, Knode) the previews appear again when I go back to the desktop.

I'm confused.

Yes, I meant the file tips option.
But I just tried it, and it doesn't work for me :-(
It just switches them off in the file manager.
Sorry.

The desktop seems to have a separate configuration menu for
file *previews* though:

Desktop -> Behaviour -> Show previews for ...

I guess that is what you're looking for.
At least that option works for me.

I got no result from that menu, so I found my way to the forum. All the 'show
preview' boxes are unchecked but the previews still pop up - that's what
lead me to wonder if there's a config file messed up somehwere.

On a SuSE newsgroup, I think I remember someone suggesting a fix for a
messed up KDE installation by deleting a file or directory, so KDE had to
totally rebuild the user config next time it started. I'll give that a try if you
can point me to the right place.

Thanks,

Steve

Ah yes, you said that in your original post. Sorry.
You might want to check it with a newly created user
(without .kde directory).

Sorry, I don't know what they were referring to.
Of course you could delete your complete .kde directory, but you'd
lose your complete config. Maybe you try to delete files more
selectively...

I renamed my ~/.kde and restarted, so a new one was built. The previews
pop up, but all the boxes in the desktop behaviour bit are unchecked. I
found the kdesktoprc file, which had no preview= entry. I set previews for
audio files, and the file changed to include preview=audio, went back to
desktop config and removed audio previews, and kdesktoprc changes to
preview= (Thats nothing, not even empty "" quotes). It appears that
everything is doing what it should, except obeying the settings.

Exactly the same for root, and a new user.

I then tried the 'live eval' version of SuSE9, which runs from a CD. Guess
what, previews pop up, even with all the boxes unchecked.

If KDE with your distro works as it should, then I have to figure that the KDE
that SuSE distributes is wierd. Next stop the SuSE newsgroup.

Thanks for the help.

Erm, wait, previews don't pop up.
Now I'm not sure if we understood each other well...
Those are called "kfile plugins" or "file tips" and they
contain meta data on the file, like the creator of a document.
And they optionally include a preview icon (to make the
discussion even more confusing ;-).

Previews are icons created from the content of the file
(or in the case of audio files it starts playing as long as the mouse
hovers over the file.)

It's possible to choose independently whether *previews* are shown
in the file manager and on the desktop. It's possible to switch off
the *file tip popups* for the file manager, but I didn't find that
option for the desktop.

So, in a way, what you're trying to do (if I got you right) *doesn't*
work for my distro. Not sure if that's possible at all.
