cursors in suse 9.0, kde 3.1.4

It no longer seems possible to fix the cursor in suse. The sets from kde-look hardly work at all. The kde Control Panel never did work right. The method of editing /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/default/index.themes has no effect at all. Does any one have any ideas? I really need a big cursor.
