Not saving desktop config changes

I apologize if this is a dumb question  but I am new to linux and cannot figure this out. I am running SuSE 8.0 Pro and am logged in as root. I make my preferred changes to the desktop and modify the date and time. I apply the changes and everything is fine until I logout. When I log back in the desktop has changed back to the default. If I shutdown and restart, both the desktop and the date and time have changed. I am confused. Any direction you can point me in?

Thanks,
Brock

sorry...

You can change time and date in BIOS. (and save settings there)
if your machine is using these you will see a permanent difference.
