Screensaver woes

i386, FreeBSD 5 Release, KDE 3.1.3
I've searched on this topic but have not seen any real answers yet.

Regardless of which screensaver I choose, at the idle time specified I only get a blank screen. Also, the setup... button does nothing and when I click the test button the desktop freezes until I hit a key. Oddly though the mouse works fine. The screen does not blank while testing.

Does anyone have an answer to this yet?
