[kopete] Newbie Confusion installing 0.8.4 in mandrake 10

I downloaded the source for kopete 0.8.4 and successfully built it.

./configure
make
make install

I then did a whereis kopete, and found it in /usr/bin which was the same location the old one was installed in, so I assumed it had been copied over the old one.

So i went into KDE and ran it.. but in the about box it says it's version 0.8.0

Is the about box wrong? or has something gone wrong with the install?

I'm new to linux... and i've relied on RPMs so far.

I found a site that said I should use ./configure --prefix=/usr for mandrake, so I tried that as well (running make again etc), with the same result.

Any help greatly appreciated.. thanks.

The new version and the old version may have different names for the libraries and other support files they call on, which could cause some crossover between them. Try doing a 'make uninstall' on the old version then reinstall the new one.

try running /usr/local/kde/bin/kopete

If you installed the other kopete with rpm or during system install. It can be removed with rpm -e kdenetwork-kopete
