AFAIK it's more a question of whether it's supported by the underlying operating system,
i.e. if your Linux distro (assuming you're using Linux) supports it everything should be ok.
You can check with your distro vendor.
SuSE offers a hardware compatibility database, for example:

If its an extermal serial modem, if should be supported. Most external serial modems are hardware modems and thus, recieve only generic signals from the operating system. All hardware modems are supported by linux, as hardware modems adhere to a standard and dont require driver software. Winmodems are where the problems generally lie since they do not contain all the hardware needed and thus simulate their use through drivers.
