Kopete 0.8.0 seems to hang

Hi all,
I recently upgraded to KDE 3.2. Until now I'm very happy with it. Now I wanted to configure kopete.

Starting Kopete runs as expected, but as soon as I want to connect to one of the protocols (no matter which one) Kopete hangs.

I already tried to remove the kopeterc and reconfigure the protocols again.

To eliminate possible problems with interactions between kopete and
kwallet I tried to save the password unsafe. Also I tried not to save the password.

Starting kopete from the command line does not provide any output.

Im running Gentoo Linux with Kernel 2.6.2

I have no idea what else I could do to solve the problem. Can anyone help me.
Cheers,
Tom
