Help! Can't "make". Compile problems!

Hi there, I'm running Fedora Core 1, and i'm trying to compile Kopete but ran into a big problem.

I was able to ./configure properly , i used the prefix=/usr

but then when i "make" i get here and it stops:

/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lpcre
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[4]: *** [libkopete.la] Error 1
make[4]: Leaving directory `/home/silentscope/kopete-0.7.5/kopete/libkopete'
make[3]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[3]: Leaving directory `/home/silentscope/kopete-0.7.5/kopete/libkopete'
make[2]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/silentscope/kopete-0.7.5/kopete'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/silentscope/kopete-0.7.5'
make: *** [all] Error 2

Any help would be appreciated, thanks alot!!

I think you are missing pcre, "/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lpcre"
and it can be found there:
http://at.rpmfind.net/opsys/linux/RPM/libpcre.so.0.html
more info http://www.pcre.org/

edit:
oops. it seems to be source rpm. And anyway you might need dev version of pcre library. Hope this helps.

Hi thanks for your help 138! It worked, but now i got this problem:

/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lart_lgpl_2
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[4]: *** [libkopete.la] Error 1

What rpm do i need for that?

Thanks again! :)

Glad that it helped. Now you need libart_lgpl --> "cannot find -lart_lgpl_2", probably a dev version again to compile kopete without an error.
You might want to look there:
http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idpl/563870/com/libart_lgpl-2.3.10-74.i386.rpm.html

prefix=/usr

im using slackware 9.1, i previously couldn't get pase make (see above). I did ./configure prefix=/usr and it compiled cleanly. Only problem was i couldn't do anything with kopete.

i'd post a screenshot but i reverted back to 0.7.4 before i thought of it.

the menubar went like this:

File View No Text!

under no text was an empty dropdown menu. very odd. any idea's anybody?

Which version was that? 0.7.5 or 0.8*? Because I just upgraded my kopete from 0.7.4 to 0.7.5 and everything works just fine. Here is what I did:
./configure --prefix=/opt/kde-3.1 (my kde is under the /opt/kde-3.1 directory)
make
make install
So it was basic install nothing special and like I said works just like it should. I have qt-3.1.2, gcc-3.2.1 and kde-3.1.4.
Could you give me a little more details so maybe I can help you out.

Good to hear that I was able to help you out.
To get the main menu back press ctrl+m, that should bring it right back to where it was.

ps. that link above to libart_lgpl could have been more accurate one, well maybe I should really start reading the pages before submitting them :)
cos here is one straight to Fedore rpm http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idpl/866287/com/libart_lgpl-devel-2.3.16-2.i386.rpm.html

Just compiled 0.8rc1 and all menus are there, so I can't help you solving out that problem since I don't have it. Only problem that I have is that I can't connnect to irc :).
Well, back to 0.7.5 it seems to work flawlessly.

There doesn't seem to be any other ctrl commands besides that ctrl + m and ctrl + f (Show offline users).
You can get those icons back from the setting menu --> Show toolbar.
And what comes to smileys, I don't know how to get rid of those, anyway I haven't paid attention to them because I usually have only irc window open. But if they start bothering me and I find a way to get rid of those I let you know.

edit. Checked those smileys, which I don't seem to have (I got bubbles besides nick names). So I think it's about what icons you use generally. And good to hear my answers were useful.

i tried ./configure --prefix=/opt/kde-3.1 ; make ; make in..

i tried ./configure --prefix=/opt/kde-3.1 ; make ; make install, and it didn't install the binary to my path, and when i went to ./kopete/kopete and did ./kopete (starting in the src dir), it claimed to open, but put nothing in the console, and didn't open the gui or put even a blank icon in the tray - any idea's? slackware 9.1, kde3.1.4, kopete 0.8rc1

Do you know where your KDE is installed? If not, you can find out by running this command:
bash-2.05a$ which konsole
/opt/kde-3.1/bin/konsole
As I said my KDE is under /opt/kde-3.1, yours is probably somewhere else. I don't know where Slackware installs KDE but if I had to make a guess I would say it's under /usr/kde, /opt/kde or /usr/local/kde.
So, do:
./configure --prefix=<path-to-kde>
If everything went ok, do:
make
Still no errors, do:
su
password:<your-root-pwd>
make install
Atleast that's the way I have allways managed to install my KDE applications.
Hope this helps.

Hello, I have got a Mandrake 9.1, when I type ./configure,kopete 0.75 , I've got as answer:
checking for xml2-config... not found
configure: error: libxml2 not found anywhere, please check ftp://xmlsoft.org/ for libxml >= 2.4.8.

I controlled in my /usr directory and I found:
libxml.so.1, libxml
libxml2.so.2, libxml2

how can I install Kopete?

Thank

You are missing xml2-config. in order to get it you need to install libxml2-devel rpm for mandrake 9.1.
