Problem configuring 3D acceleration in SuSE 9.0

When I run anything graphics-intensive (tuxracer, openGL screensavers, etc. to name a few) it is PAINFULLY slow and I would estimate I am getting a framerate of 1-1.5 fps. I opened the Sax2 utility and enabled the "3D hardware acceleration" option. However, Sax2 doesn't seem to acknowledge that setting because it has no effect and when I reopen the utility the 3D acceleration is still disabled. Admittedly I am running the pitiful Intel motherboard graphics chip, but I have gotten as much as 15 fps at 800x600 in Need For Speed under Windows with this chipset. What file/setting do I need to modify for the 3D acceleration I have to be enabled?
