getting MPlayer (or KMPlayer) work with aRts [perhaps OT]

Hi, when I had KDE 3.1 and a MPlayer beta installed on my system, the sound was ouput to aRts and i could controll the volume from MPlayer. Since novmeber I've been compiling KDE CVS updates and then no sound came at all, I hade to shutdown arts and use another mplayer plugin when I watched my dvd's.

Last week I compiled latest mplayer and now the sound came back, but there remains a problem. I can't controll the volume from mplayer; i have to use kmix for that (which is rather inconvinient when watching rental dvd's with my friends on a projector.)

Off course it's not a big problem but I'd like to show off a great system for my Windows-friends.

Does anyone know where to find the problem, has mplayers aRts-support started to fail or is it aRts that's to blame and fix?

(esd, sdl, alsa, etc. works perfectly with mplayer, but they are less smooth since one has to shutdown arts first.)

Did you change the player version?

I have KDE3.1 here and can't control volume either when using arts as mplayer's audio output.

Seems the arts output plugin has changed.
