kdm no keyboard

I rebuilt my machine, moving from suse9.0 to 9.1, and installed kde3.3.0. My problem now is that kdm does not respond to any keyboard input. The background is an image which i did not select, and i cannot remove package kdebase3-kdm.i586.rpm. It tells me it is not installed, but i know it is because i cannot install the package as it is already installed.

Could anybody please provide any pointers?!?
