Install on IRIX - clueless

Hi - I'm trying to get KDE 302 to work on my SGI IRIX 6.5.13m.

I've downloaded & installed kdelibs & kdebase. I've tried following the post-install instructions on kde.org, but it doesn't work.

I'm using (stuck with) 4dwm. I do not know how to replace this. This is what I've tried so far -

I've created a .xsession file in my home directory, with the line 'startkde' in it. I've edited the path to include the kde bin directory.

I've created a SHLIB_PATH variable which points to the kde lib folder. (I'm not sure whether I should use SHLIB_PATH or LD_LIBRARY_PATH)

I've created the KDEDIR variable and set it correctly.

However, these variables aren't in my start up file (I don't know where it is!), so when I reboot, the path is reset to default.

After setting the variables, restarting the X Server doesn't work. I just get a blank screen with the 'x' mouse cursor, & I need to manually restart.

The .xsession file also prevents me from logging in to my account in 4dwm. I have to restart in single user mode & delete the file & then start again.

I'm at a loss here. I cannot get KDE to start. I'm a complete newb to everything Unix, so if someone could please guide me through these frustrating starting troubles, I'd GREATLY appreciate it.

Thanks!
