kdm_greet error: "Can't open default user face"

When customizing desktop settings and such in KDE 3.2.1, now when logging in with kdm as any user, this error is logged:

"kdm_greet: Can't open default user face."

What does this mean, and what files are associated?
I've tried renaming all X/KDE-related files/dirs in the user dir--to no avail.

Additionally, "startkde" cannot load an X interface,
though it couldn't before when I could login with kdm.

Thanks for any insights!
