Can't get KDM to start

hi guys.
If I do an "init 5" I get the XDM. I have /etc/sysconfig/dekstop as DISPLAYMANAGER=KDE (also tried KDM) and /etc/X11/prefdm set to kdm.

I compiled KDE (3.2.2) myself, it's not a distro installation. Any ideas on how to get KDM login/display manager running?

Phil.

PS - Running on FC2. XOrg as distro installation, but KDE my own.
