an endless loop of kdm

i'm desperate...

until yesterday, i could use kdm for logging in without any problems. i don't see why this is, but now, instead of starting kde (or any other environment), kdm just restarts the xserver and by doing so itself. it's irrelevant whether i try to login as normal user or root. starting kde from console via startx still works fine, though.

i didn't even touch any config-files, actually, that's what makes me wonder most. all i did was to install java2 (1.4.0 with webstart), mozilla 1.3 and openoffice 1.0.3.1, all from official binaries. oh yes, and i 'apt-got' all available r-packages (statistical analysis environment).

purging kdm and reinstalling it had no effect. but i noticed an "fold: command not found" error in some x-logfile, though fold is in path. anybody has a clue? any hints are welcome!

my system: debian (testing) with xfree86-4.3 and kde 3.1.1, a matrox g200 (mga).

I had similar problems in SuSE 8.0. The problem was that the mount options for my home directory were incorrect. Is your home directory on a seperate partition?
If so, please post your /etc/fstab entry for this partition.

better late than never...

sorry, i reinstalled the system, that of course somehow "solved" the symptoms... and i just forgot about my post last year.
but: it re-appeared on another machine, and after weeks of checking everything, i found what caused my troubles -- just some wrong PATH defined in /etc/environment. obviously i removed a folder which i had in path, but didn't remove that entry. this seems to have unset PATH completely, so that "fold" couldn't be found (it's called by /etc/X11/Xsession).

@Rinse: thanks after all, of course
