strange login

I upgraded my debian KDE to 3.2 and encounter a new login behaviour:
When I klick the login button (selected KDE for wm) a dialog box appears to tell me that the system is booting and I should wait. When I press the OK button in that box, a larger display window appears with no text in it but a small OK button at the lower left. If I wait, nothing happens for any time I wait (for those system processes to finish). When I press the OK button (immediately), KDE will start without any problems. What is the cause for that dialog and how can I get around it?
