Language selection within KDE

Hello,

I have some trouble with the language selection within KDE. I have two SuSE 8.0 Professional installations on different hardware. On the first one everything is fine. On the second one I have some problems getting the Keyboard layout right.
I configured KDE using the KControl to be for example German. But the logon screen uses an English keyboard layout. For the users, including root the desktop and applications were in German, but the consoles still used an English keyboard. I set RC_LANG to de_DE@Euro but it didn't change the behavior. I only got the console's to a German keyboard after using the Germany keyboard layout within KControl (which I do not have to use on the first installation, so why in the second one??)
All in all I'am a little bit confused how to control exactly the language and keyboard layouts.
Can somebody help me clear the mist?

Thanks
Andreas

No, not really.

But AFAIK YaST asks you to specify a language and keyboard layout during
installation. Maybe that's where your differences in behaviour
come from?

I selected German during the installation. But even if I didn't, I must have to chance to change it later.

Yes, of course. But not necessarily in the KDE control center,
but in YaST. Maybe it sets some language and keyboard
setting at a level below your user's KDE configuration
(The different keyboard layouts at the login screen suggest that,
for example).

If you're sure the settings in YaST are identical then this would
void this argument, of course...

OK, but where can I set the languahe for the logon screen (and I don't mean within kcontrol and if it can be set separately, because after the logon I have the German keyboard)? I played with these RC_LANG variables, but I wasn't very successful....

I'm not sure I understood your latest post in its entirety,
but I just tried on my system at work (SuSE 8.2 with KDE 3.1.4)
and I can set the language of the login manager in kcontrol
(you *are* using KDM, don't you?):

System administration -> Login manager (or something close to that)
In German: Systemverwaltung -> Anmeldungsmanager
gleich der erste Reiter hat einen Sprachselektor

Those entries are greyed out until you click the admin mode button
at the bottom and enter the root password.

I haven't found an option for the keyboard layout though.

What I meant by "not in KControl" means, that I already set it to German there, but is has no effect. My question is, if there is some other place to setat, because it doesn't work by KControls, YaST and RC_LANG variables.
Just to be sure, I'am talking about the logon screen, only.

Cheers

I just hadn't been sure whether you had realised that there
are different language settings, one for the desktop and
one for the login manager. Besides changing the language there
works for me...
I'm afraid I cannot help you then...

Any takers?

Try $LANG instead of $RC_LANG, because $LANG has the highest priority of the language environment variables.

Have a nice day!
