I have a problem with X and KDM!! please advise

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: i have my /etc /var /usr /opt on seperate partitions!
Hello,

i think its a KDM and nvidia problem, please help anyway! because windows su** big time once u get used to linux+kde.

Ok this is my problem.

I have installed Gentoo Linux+kernel 2.4.20+nvidia kernel+nvidia GLX and Xfree and KDE 3.1.4 ofcourse.

Today i made a change to my /etc/fstab and my system acted strange... so i copied the original fstab back and did not do ANYTHING else. But the system did nt want to boot xdm/kdm anymore.

The system boots without any problems. But once it starts X the nvidia splash screens comes up but here the system fails to load the XDM or KDM. I tried both that is way i say...
The nvidia splash screen comes up then the system fails to load kdm, then it tries once again ... fails tries once again ... fails after 3 or 4 times it shuts down and i am now looking at the incredible ugly prompt....

anyone : do you know what this is all about? plz advise...

Did you try to start the X server from the command line ? By logging and then typing "startx" ?
And have a look at the "/var/log/kdm.log" file to see what is going wrong.

#
# NOTE: 1) this behaviour is overridden when a ~/.xinitrc exists, and startx

# 2) even if a ~/.xsession exist, if XSESSION can be resolved, it will
# be executed rather than ~/.xsession, else KDM breaks ...
#
# Defaults depending on what you install currently include:

# Gnome - will start gnome-session
# kde-<version> - will start startkde (ex: kde-3.0.2)
# Xsession - will start a terminal and a few other nice apps
