Redhat, Mandrake, and Suse oh my!
My roommate and I are both running Redhat 9 and are interested in trying out different distros. He's got Suse downloading from an FTP on his computer (heh, and since they throttle the hell out of FTP's here he has another 2 days before that download completes) and my friend sent me a bum copy of Mandrake that got screwed up during the transfer. So...my question; how do I install a downloaded distro? All of the provided installation instructions are how to install with a CD, however, I have no idea what files to put on what CD so that the layout is correct. Anybody able to help me with that?
Secondly: Everybody give your opinions on Redhat 9, Mandrake 9.1, and Suse 8.2. I'd like to hear your inputs on these three as far as which one seems the best fit for our individual purposes.

I've never used any form of Linux other than SuSE 8.2, but it works brilliantly with KDE and makes it look even more beautiful with SuSE graphics with are slightly different from the standard KDE ones. Just don't get SuSE if you intend to use Gnome.

Well MDK provides ISO Images. Burn them on a CD and restart you PC that's it.
SuSE doesn't provide ISO's (only the SuSE Live Eval, but it's not installable) You have to download it via FTP on you computer.
And RH? Well I don't know.

I got the MDK ISO's, they just install really crazy like if you try installing every single package that comes with it. I selected packages a little more vaguely this time and it's pretty good now. And I LOVE MDK's look on KDE, it's similar to what I've seen on Suse (which also looks great).
Well...the ftp version of suse is not prepared to be copied to CDs instead you should ask your roomate to share the distribution once he finish downloading it.
He can "share" it using an ftp server, http server, nfs or smb (never tried). Then you just need to burn the /suse/i386/8.2/boot/boot.iso to a CD and start you computer with it.
You will need the ip address of your roomate's computer and the address were is has putten the distribution (standard stuff). As it is your roomate the connection should be preatty fast and the installation will proceed as from a regular cd (except during instalation it will always be CD1 :-).
Note: curious thing, I was using RH9 too and I'm also waiting for my neighbour to finish is download of suse 8.2. Funny.

For what it's worth I would recommend Suse 8.2 Pro. I used to use RedHat 6,6.1 & then 7 and only then I tried Suse 7.0 and since I've tried I have been using Suse. I still have Suse 8.1 running on one system and Suse 8.2 on the other. I have recently tried RedHat again and Gentoo but I am still sticking to Suse as my favourite Distro.
