Some fonts do not print from K applications

I need a clue with an odd problem of fonts not printing from KDE applications.

The problem may have existed from right after I installed Mandrake 9.1 and its CUPS.

It wasn't something I was looking for. Unusual fonts displayed and printed okay. So printing "ordinary" fonts was taken for granted. But the problem was first noticed after disabling several excess fonts with kfontinst.

Fonts like Blippo, Comic Sans, and Trebuchet display and print. But not Courier New, Palatino Linotype, and Times New Roman.

They display correctly but get substituted with a default font (looks like Arial) when printed.

There is the same problem with either Type 1 or TTS versions of these fonts.

And the same problem with a network laser printer and with a local inkjet printer.

And Ghostscript has the same problem with Print Preview.

But these same fonts do print from Open Office Writer while it seems they do not from all KDE applications.

My /usr/share/ghostscript/7.05/lib/FontMap.GS does include what seems to be correct kdfontinst entries to alias and locate
the pfb font files. I haven’t changed anything except for disabling some fonts with the KDE Font Installer (kdfontinst).

/TimesNewRomanPS-BoldItalicMT (/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont/Type1/timesbi.pfb) ;
/TimesNewRomanPSMT (/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont/Type1/times.pfb) ;
/TimesNewRomanPS-BoldMT (/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont/Type1/timesbd.pfb) ;
/TimesNewRoman /TimesNewRomanPSMT ;
/TimesNewRoman-Roman /TimesNewRomanPSMT ;
/TimesNewRoman-Bold /TimesNewRomanPS-BoldMT ;
/TimesNewRoman-BoldItalic /TimesNewRomanPS-BoldItalicMT ;
/TimesNewRoman-Italic /TimesNewRomanPS-BoldItalicMT ;
/TimesNewRoman-MediumItalic /TimesNewRomanPS-BoldItalicMT ;
/TimesNewRoman-Regular /TimesNewRomanPSMT ;
/TimesNewRomanPS-ItalicMT (/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont/Type1/timesi.pfb) ;

These same type of entries are also there for Blippo, etc., but they work!

This is a frustrating problem and I'd sure appreciate a clue as to what might be going on.

Thanks for your help.
