url handling in kde apps

Using kde 3.1.1, in apps like kmail, if I click on an url, kde downloads the url to disk, eg /home/dean/.kde3.1/share/apps/kfmexec/tmp/* and launches konqueror on that local file. Therefore only fully qualified url's work from within the viewed page.

I created a new account and I don't get this behaviour (it launches konq on the actual http url) so doesn't look like a global config problem AFAIK.

I suppose I have screwed up kde mime types or something for my login. I deleted everything from ~/.kde/share/mimelnk/ but that doesn't resolve it. Where would this be configured?

Any help much appreciated.

thx

Control Center->KDE Components->File Assosications
text/html: topmost entry should be Konqueor and clicking on "Edit" you should see
kfmclient openURL %u text/html
as the command
