KDE 3.1 problems !

Hello !

Is there anyone more but me that has encountered following problem:

After installing KDE 3.1 , the konqueror filebrowser is inpossible to use when running as root.

The problem is that it crashes instantly when trying to open a window.

would be interesting to know why & what to do !

- Oops.
- W-what do you mean, oops?
- Some jerk put this...
- Don't say "oops".
- What do you say we try that again?
- Yes, yes. Yes. Without the "oops". Thataway.

Try running it from the konsole and see if there are any odd messages coming. Or you could try to run: #strace konqueror ; to see where it stops. Do you get any tracebacks(that dialog which come along when an app crashes in kde, however rare that may be ;) )?

Maybe it's that...

I had this problem when IconView and Sound Previewing was enabled...
If that's your problem, you can either turn soundpreviewing off or you edit your /opt/kde3/bin/startkde (or whereever your distro puts it) and remove LD_BIND_NOW=true before kdeinit.
LD_BIND_NOW should increase performance, but causes misbehaviour in some cases...

I removed the 'LD_BIND_NOW' , and now it seems to work.

but why ?!

I have the same problem when I updated from KDE 3.0.0 to KDE 3.1 in SuSE 8.0
I've commented LD_BIND_NOW in 'startkde' but still doesn't work.
It only works when in Konqueror Preferences -> Configure Konqueror -> Previews , I de-activated 'file' preview.
