Wrong display resolution every to xserver restart

This happens on my laptop, debian squeeze installed, with KDE 4.4

From boot to boot, the xserver starts with the wrong resolution. I usually fix it by restarting the xserver. Usually one restart is enough. I played around with restarting it again and again, it seems that the resolution is wrong every other time (2 states oscillation). I am not too sure what's the cause, whether it's a bug or a configuration problem. If somebody could give me some hints: what package is most likely to be the culprit? what type of info should I provide? etc...
