filemanager (dolphin and konqueror) unable to show home folder contents

I had exactly the same problem a couple of months ago; searched for the solution online and fixed it. Now I have the same problem again and forgot how I fixed it. Here's the problem

In KDE filemanager, both dolphin and konqueror, home folder contents are not visible. I am able to see contents for all other folders except user home. I can also see all files in home folder on terminal using 'ls' command.
