which program drives wallpaper changes?

I wanted to take a closer look at the mechanism that allows a wallpaper slideshow in KDE and add some features. Since I haven't looked at the software before, I am finding it hard to figure out where to start. Can someone give me a clue which program is running that switches the wallpaper for the slide show function? I am using KDE 3.5 now, but I expect to want to do this in 4.1 too, if that is different.
