Installing KDE on Unix system without root permissions

Hi,
I am using a sun machine with Unix operating system. Since its GUI is not good, I am facing difficulty using it. Can someone please tell me if I can install KDE on it while retaining its data and network settings. Another thing is, I don't have root permissions for this machine. Is there any way out of it? Lastly, can you suggest from where I can get its CD or download it. Thanks.
