launching executables from within konqueror

Hi,

How can I get Konqueror (from KDE 3.5) to lunch executables (+x files)
from inside the file browser window?

If I double click an executable file icon it asks me which application should it use to view that file.

But I just want to run that file.

Thanks

So what kind of file are we talking about, a shell script? The answer may be to create a link, what they call a "desktop launcher" in Gnome

Right click, then click on "Create New"

From there, I think the answer might be worked out by clicking on "link to application", or possibly "link to location". or probably the former.

click on "properties" . Under "command", you'll find a space for your shell command.

Hope this helps.

Well, thanks for your idea.
To tell the truth what I want is to lunch a file, maybe binary, from konqueror by double clicking it.
For example, if I develop a piece of code, compile it I might just want to run it from konqueror it stead of from within the IDE. As I would expect someone else (the program consumer) to do.
I could edit konqueror's code and add that behavior when a file is double clicked.
That is, check if the file is executable (permissions) and if the option "execute executables" is true, then execute it.
But that is meaningless if this option is already present but just hidden somewhere.

Any other ideas?
Thanks.

Well, my friend. Maybe i' m late and you may have already solved that problem, but this can be proved
useful for other users as well, so i decided to post.
At first locate the executable that you want to run by double-clicking from within konqueror.
Right click on the executable and select "properties".
Now you have a window with 2 tabs "general" and "permissions".
In the tab named "general" is a text field that says "Type: Executable File".
Next that text field is a small icon button with a tool on it (a key tool as we here in Hellas name it).
Click on that small icon button.
Now you have a new window open with the name "Edit File Type Application/x-executable".
This window have 2 tabs "General" and "Embedding".
In "General" tab is 3 fields and a large button with a gear on it.
Do not touch the field named "Filename Patterns".
Make sure that the field "Description" says: "Executable File" and leave untouched.
In the field named "Application Preference Order" click on the button "Add...".
In the new window that opened, just type "open" (without the "") in the text field and click "ok".
Click "Apply" and "Ok" in the remaining open windows till you remain with the konqueror window opened.
Now try to double click your executable and feel the magic.
There was much easier ways to achieve the same result but i wanted to show the "idea behind".
An easier way: Double click your executable, and in the window that asks with what to open it, just type "open"
in the text field that has focus already. Depending on what you have installed of kde, you might have a
checkbox that says "remember" or "always use" or something like that. Ticking the checkbox and clicking
on "Ok" will do the magic.
You can do the same thing with shell scripts that calls graphical applications, as well as for executables with
extensions. But... be careful, as you may cause a mess.
Anyway... if you do it with the first "hard way" you will know how to fix things in the future ;-)
I hope to hear from you guys, if that was of any help.
Cheers...

KDE4 problem?

Regardless of Konqueror, I'm encountering a problem where an executable does not open when the Icon is clicked (e.g. from Dolphin). I didn't have the problem with KDE3.5.
Under normal conditions, it is not necessary to put "open" into the "Application Preference Order". My problematic executable opens as a console application from within a shell, and it opens as a GUI application when opened from the desktop (the same executable). This behaves correctly with KDE 3.5 (which is installed as kubuntu on my laptop), and it behaves correctly with gnome on my desktop, but the same desktop with KDE (also kubuntu), fails to start the GUI. In all cases, the properties of the executable file are exactly the same.

Since the gearwheel icon for executables appears grey in KDE4, I thought that this indicates a "launch disabled state". But opening e.g. gwenview from /usr/bin in Dolphin goes OK.
I'd be happy to hear about any experiences in this respect (KDE version: 4.1.4).
