Good Afternoon,
I am totally new to Linux, coming from Windows XP. I have a new system (AMD 64 Athlon x2, 4gb RAM, Twin 500gb hard drives (one Windows, one opensuse 11.0), extranal WD 500gb My Book (has both USB and Firewire) and a generic card reader (usb powered straight from the MB). I have installed OpenSuse 11.0 with Gnome 2.22 and KDE 3.5
Problem 1:
My problems are that the card reader just flat does not work. Will not show up anywhere with or without a card in it. Any ideas?
Problem 2:
The WD My Book, did work under Gnome 2.22 which I originally installed, but when I installed KDE 3.5 it does not work. The drive works fine under XP, but not KDE. When I attempt to access the drive using Konqueror, I get an error message:
"mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdg1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so"
If I right click on the desktop icon and click "mount" I get the same error message. I have googled for the last several days trying to find out something about this. From what I have read I think this is a "HAL" problem? but I don't know.
Problem 3:
And last but not least! I have a JVC Digital Camcorder that connects via firewire, the system does not "see" that as well. Do Camcorders just not work under Linux?
Does any usb/firewire gadgets work under Linux?
I am finding out I am really liking Linux especially KDE But if I can't get this stuff to work, I will be forced to go back to Windows XP, and I REALLY DON'T WANT TO DO THAT! but.....
One last problem.... If I don't quit spending so much time at this desk trying to fix these problems, my wife is going to kill me! I am sorry that this is so long, but I am trying to be thorough.
I really appreciate any help from anyone.
Thank you
Tim Williams
