Mouse and keyboard graber/logger

This is more a question than other thing.
The point is that I know of no app to record events coming from keyboard and mouse, to replay them later (yes, a desktop automation tool like xmacro and some other). Is there something out there.
This can be usefull for purposes like automation of documentation screenshooting (for translators).
The use case is this
  1. a documenter takes screenshots of the english version of a program, versiĆ³n x.y.x on a desktop with a given standard configuration, as defined in the .kde directory, while recording those events.
  2. Then the documentalist distributes the docbook files, the screenshots files, and the record of the desktop's mouse and keyboard.
  3. Finally, the documentation translator runs the recorded events on a desktop with the same standard configuration, and that's it.
