Fish problem

I have just built a x86_64 multilib system from scratch and ran into a problem with fish that seems to be a configuration or rights issue for me:
A remote connection using fish cannot be established as a standard user with Konqueror-3.5.9 or Krusader-1.80.0 (process .. terminated unexpectedly). Everything is fine using sftp; for root fish is ok, too, ssh from a terminal window also as well as midnight commander (cd /#sh:me@host).
Key system features:
linux-2.6.23.13,
glibc-2.7,
openssh-4.7p1,
qt-3.3.8,
kde-3.5.9.

Connecting to the same servers from other (older) machines is possible without problems.

As I could not figure out what causes this behaviour (maybe I'm overlooking the critical item again and again) any hints are most welcome.
