Laptop + External monitor -> Dual desktops

Dear KDEr's,

I am hoping someone can help me with my dual head setup requirement:
  • I have a laptop running KDE [3.5] and using the fglrx driver (8.45.5-1)
  • I wish to connect an external monitor and configure X/KDE/fglrx to show me two desktops. The external monitor has the same resolution as the laptop screen.
  • I'd like to be able to move my mouse between the two screens.
  • I am not expecting windows to drag between the two, although this would be nice.
  • Ideally each desktop would share the same set of (12) virtual workspaces. (i.e. pressing Alt F1 on each desktop would end up showing the same display) -- this is NOT a requirement.

I have seen a number of example xorg.conf's but none of them have worked as expected, many of them appear to use now obsolete fglrx options.

I have sucessfully achieved a 'spanned desktop' (with aticonfig --dtop horizontal) but this is not what I am after.
