4.0.1 icons toasted- how to fix

I've got 3.5.8 and 4.0.1 available
last night I dug into adept on the 3.5.8-side and requested uninstall of everything that looked like a game. In the process I seem to have also toasted something that gives me what I'm going to call icons on the 4.0.1-side.

Such as:
I don't have a K bottom-left: I now have a blue left-pointing arrow
Favourites are now all sheetofpaper with a green ?

System settings are now all little monitors with a green something covering the left side, except for
Look and Feel > Splash Screen
and
Network & Connectivity > Network Settings and Sharing
Computer Administration > Date and Time
which are little white and yellow gears

any thoughts on what piece I toasted that <obviously> I shouldn't have </obviously> that will put things back to defaults when I install it again??
