No network device found

I am using K desktop environment 3.5.6 on a dell optiplex 755. Installed ok except no network device is found. In Kinfocenter network interfaces here is the displayed info:
Name IO ip address 127.0.0.1 network mask 255.0.0.0 type loopback hwaddr 00:00:00:00:00:00. I have no network and no internet connection.

As a side note i can use puppy linux 3.01 and it has no trouble find my network card. Puppy says the interface is eth0 type ethernet module e1000 bus pci description intel(r) pro/1000 network driver.

Any idea how i can get KDE to recognize my ethernet card?
